In all English lessons students work in small teaching groups so we get to know them as individuals and can build on their strengths and interests. We focus on the core skills that help us all to communicate: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Whatever the task, we look to include issues of personal growth and social awareness. We have a strong intervention programme to help those who need extra support.

In Years 6 to 9 we build the skills identified in the National Curriculum. In Year 9 all students aim to complete a Functional Skills Entry Level qualification. In years 10 and 11 we aim to enter students for the higher Functional skills Level 1 and 2 qualifications which are equivalent to GCSE and/or GCSE, whichever are most appropriate to each students needs.

At Marland all students take part in a reading program called ‘The Accelerated Reading Scheme’. This encourages students to read regularly both during daily reading sessions and during their own time. Reading is differentiated to accommodate the ability of the student and to encourage realistic progress in their literacy according to their reading age.
